What is Buhurt?

Armored combat or Buhurt (from Old French béhourd: "joust", "tournament") or medieval combat, among other names, is a modern full contact fighting sport with steel blunt weapons characteristic of the Middle Ages. Fighters are covered in full modern-produced protective armor, made from steel or titanium alloy, made to aesthetically be close to their historical counterparts with modern protection techniques. Hits and blows may be aimed at any parts of the body (with the limitations set in the rules/regulations); both wrestling and striking techniques are permitted, while thrusts are forbidden. Unlike staged battles, that can be seen at festivals of historical reenactment of the Middle Ages armored combat is a competitive full contact international sport with many long running national and international tournament series.

Buhurt Categories

Melee

Melee

This is the bread and butter of Buhurt, often fought in 5v5, 12v12, or even massive 30v30 formats.

The Objective: Put the entire opposing team on the ground while keeping your teammates standing.

The Style: A chaotic mix of heavy weapon strikes, wrestling, trips, and wall-grappling. If you have a background in Judo, Wrestling, or Rugby, you will feel right at home here.

Duels

Melee

Duels are all about speed, precision, and endurance. There is no grappling or wrestling allowed. Instead, you fight in 1-minute rounds, scoring clean points by striking target zones on your opponent.

Sword & Shield: Balance of quick sword strikes and blocking with a heater shield.

Sword & Buckler: High mobility, using a small, hand-held round shield to deflect and counter.

Longsword: Two-handed sword play requiring incredible distance control and hand speed.

Polearm: For heavy hitters using weapons like halberds to land powerful strikes.

Profight/Outrance

Profight/Outrance

This is the most intense individual discipline. It is essentially MMA in full plate armor. Weight classes exist here, and fighters use a mix of striking, shield-punches, throws, kicks, and active ground-and-pound to win by points or TKO.
